What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?
Occupational therapy uses "occupations" or meaningful activities to help people of all ages to perform the tasks that they need and want to do in their daily lives. In the school system, we work on skills to help kids participate as independently as possible within their classroom, at recess, lunch, specialists, etc. Some skills that we work on include the following: fine motor skills, visual perception, sensory processing, postural control, seating and/or environmental accommodations, assistive technology, handwriting, self-care, and social skills. Any skill or activity that a student needs to be able to do at school are areas that we work on to help them participate as independently as possible!

Hi! My name is Elise Long and I am one of the occupational therapists at Jefferson. I have my master's in occupational therapy from St. Catherine University. I have worked at Jefferson since 2017. I support students from ECSE to 8th grade, typically students receiving special education services from a Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT). I enjoy working with kids in their classroom or in the OT room, working on fine motor skills, sensory/self-regulation skills, and skills needed for everyday activities. When not at school, I enjoy baking cookies, being outside, traveling, and reading. I have an almost 2-year-old son who also keeps me busy. Please reach out with any questions you might have about OT at school. My email address is elise.long@mpls.k12.mn.us and my Google Voice number is 651-504-2391.
